China is no copycat

I’ve always been amazed by the Chinese brands. Panasoanic, Adibass, Reedbook, Heetachi… At least, in the automobile industry, who says they do copying? Check the images below. Thanks to Andrews for sending. Update: and thanks to Gems Sty for reminding us the source.

Ok, this is pushing it a bit. I mean, all cars in the same category tend to look alike. You can’t tell my mom’s Subaru could be passed off as a Mercedes if you changed the decals and symbols.

Andy, that’s just because you are so darn stupid. It’s better that you stay away from anything that has to do with cars. Try flowers instead. Even my half-blind grandmother can tell the difference between Subaru and Mercedes.

I agree with Driver… If you cant tell the diffence between a Subaru and a Mercedes you need thicker glasses! Seriously.

While the Chineese cars might look close to, they will never have the soul of a Mercedes SLR or the class of a RR Phantom…

The main problem is that anything that has been reverse enginered, especially in china, especially a car will be of abysmal build quality.
The materials, ahem, “styling”, etc. are of a pathetic standard.
Chinese cars sold in the west are all laughed at by any motoring journalist or enthusiast and are dangerously old fashioned.
They are deathtraps and junk more than anything, even if they look similar expect a circus of problems underneath, only a clown would buy one!

Maybe they inspired by Bruce Mau incomplete manifesto for Growth no35:

Imitate. Don’t be shy about it. Try to get as close as you can. You’ll never get all the way, and the separation might be truly remarkable. We have only to look to Richard Hamilton and his version of Marcel Duchamp’s large glass to see how rich, discredited, and underused imitation is as a technique.

Okay, you double 4 circle and you get 2? If you’ve passed your 1st grade math, then your teacher either made a big fat mistake or he/she is a pile of human waste like mr. john there.

“And look at that logo of Laibao, isn’t that Audi copied the logo by just.. doubleing it?”

I think what this means is Audi copied the Laibao’s logo by doubling it. You can’t blame people for mis-interpreting the meaning when the english is broken.

Well, As a Chinese decedent myself, I DO agree that they are copycats. But they ARE allowed to do it because they are not in the “patent protection union” – or whatever you call it.

By just selling it to locals in China is already a very big market to them… So what can I say?

    Hi.

Those cars are only sold in china. That’s why the German car producers don’t complain…but there’s no real need to care about this dump of product, ’cause they can’t copy the real thang.

There are 2 wrong points in your listing:

The Landwind is based upon a old model of the Opel/Vauxhall Frontera. They sold the platform to the chinese.

The smart is also not copyed. Its build in china from Daimler itself. They just changed the name and the logo for better fitting into the chinese market.

There’s another “wrong” point. The Frontera shown in the picture is neither an Opel nor a Vauxhall. It’s actually a Holden. Not that it matters as it still is the same car.

I do agree with most of the cars being ripoffs but the BYD and the Hongqui are more “inspired” by the original than blatant copies. Especially the rear of the BYD shows differences and lacks the bend in the rear side window which is a typical BMW feature.

Why are you people slamming tyler like motormouths?

Quote: “And look at that logo of Laibao, isn’t that Audi copied the logo by just.. doubleing it?”

He simply read an oddly written sentence as “isnt that Audi. (Laibao) copied the logo by just…doubleing it?”

We know Audi’s quadruple circles but if that was what the writer meant, boy it’s quite a bad attempt at sarcasm.

The reason they can get away with coping any and everything is because the Chinese don’t have copyright laws. And the chinese are not worried about the end product as long as it looks like the more expensive original i.e. copied mobile phones with a nonworking camera and or other features. (yes I’ve seem them)
