Don’t things like this make guys feel pathetic? Great, you got to see that she has cotton underpants on.
If I were male I’d be insulted by this insinuation that I devote all my attention to desperately trying to get a peek at what women are wearing.

    Jessica,

“If I were male I’d be insulted by this insinuation that I devote all my attention to desperately trying to get a peek at what women are wearing.”

I doubt that’s what the “doormat” is saying. I think it’s saying, this is playboy, and this “doormat” is what we stand for. If you like what we stand for, come in, and let’s have a look. If not, don’t. And if you come for business, wear jeans. Judging from your reaction, it does so in a very efficient manner…

By the way – if you were male, you probably wouldn’t ponder about insinuations when you got a peek of what’s between her legs… remember, male humans only have limited blood supply ;) . And that’s only one of the problem with inter-sex behavioral assumptions ;)

Oh fantastic, another socially acceptable way for creepy men to violate me with their eyes. What the hell were the creators thinking? Oh, I know,”Every woman must want to be objectified in public by allowing men to leer up their skirts!” Yeahhh, no.
Also, I’d love to know what store this is placed in front of, and why they are trying to get rid of female customers?

Do people seriously have nothing better to do than sit around thinking of ways to objectify and harass women?

Are there really men out there that are pathetic enough to consider using one of these?

Is there actually anyone who thinks this is something other than a blatant and disgusting act of misogyny?

It makes me so sad that the answer to all three of those questions is “yes.” The fact that our culture condones such actions is despicable and anyone who considers buying one of these should be ashamed of themselves.

    @johndoe
you are a moron. wear jeans if you don’t want your skirt to be looked up? How about ‘don’t leave the house if you don’t want to be raped’, or ‘don’t be a girl if you don’t want to be sexually harassed and objectified by every asshole who comes along and thinks it’s hilarious to invade you privacy and piss on your basic human rights”?

Absolutely offensive and women (or anyone) should not be subject to the oppressive patriarchal implications an Ad like this carries with it. People should feel safe and never objectified so to you johndoe and anyone who agrees that this is just comical, I say it is not and it is people like you who contribute to this highly oppressive society we live in.

I saw this ad earlier, and can’t sleep because I’m terrified that somebody might see my underpants without my express permission. We should all be more ashamed of our bodies, and our private under garments. All men are pigs, and if a man sees a woman’s underpants they might become physically attracted to that woman, and that’s unnatural. In Europe many women go around with their breasts exposed at the beach. Rape is a huge problem over there, that’s why we need to stay bundled up and hide our bodies.

“Never fear, the ludicrous hyperbolic wailing will only be brief. For now the morons from feministing.com have found a new place to play.”

    “@johndoe
    you are a moron.”

Who are these people who feel the need to defend the ad against criticism? Even if they don’t see the ad as offensive (although they really should), why do they feel the need to push back these feminist critiques?

But I think it cuts both ways. Look, johndoe is a moron. That’s obvious. We all already know that. But why say it? This kind of posturing degrades the argument to a level of personal jousting and neglects the real issues at play. This kind of confrontational name-calling reminds me of the empty sohpistry of Bill O’Reilly. Attack issues to make headway, not people (or morons) who disagree with you. Otherwise no one will listen to you, or want to listen to you.

“Is this real? No one has a legal department?”

Yeah, they should sue you for stupidity.
Honestly, this sign is not breaking the law in any way. As you can clearly see you can walk around the mirror if you want to enter that doorway, so if women pause to look where they’re going they can avoid potential embarrassment.

Or you could waste more of society’s time and resources with a frivolous lawsuit.

    @ Jesser

“As you can clearly see you can walk around the mirror if you want to enter that doorway, so if women pause to look where they’re going they can avoid potential embarrassment.”

The fact that you’re asking an entire gender to walk around something so that they can avoid having their privacy invaded is more than moronic. You pretty much take the cake for bad and/or stupid comments.

I know, like gendered bathrooms. And walls dividing shower cubicles. And opaque shower curtains. And pebbled glass windows.

Yeah, *Jesser*’s stupid comments take the cake. No irony there.

The mirror looks to be almost the length of the doorway. It looks like the mirror was placed *precisely* so that it would be difficult to enter the doorway without walking right over the mirror. “Walking around” is an option only if you’re going to press against the edges of the building.

I think the mirror is brilliant. I know. Shoot me. It’s a great build on very immature content, which if I know their branding well enough, works perfectly. And, it’s a reason for us all to wear skirts, no matter our gender. ; )

@Pat: I’m all for showing my body, so long as it’s by choice. There’s a big difference between me tearing off my clothes in front of my lover–or at a nude beach–and having a mirror on the sidewalk so that any passersby can ogle my crotch. This thread reminds me of the debate over internet privacy: we all have a right to choose what we want to share, and with whom.
I’d argue that this ad is what makes men out to be sex-obsessed swine.

@jer_: The last time I checked, people in bathrooms and showers are expecting to have their pants pulled down; in fact, most people nowadays even pull them down themselves. Nobody’s telling you to avoid these places unless you want to suddenly have your bare ass displayed to anybody on the sidewalk outside.

    wooooow…
Once, long ago, there was a time when humans weren’t so caught up in their own gender compositions that they digressed into retarded chatting matches over a glimpse of flesh. IT IS ONLY FLESH ladies, and to be fair IT IS ONLY FLESH guys… and just to be sure – if your sexuality is invaded by a mirror you are a frakking moron. If your sexuality is vindicated by voyeurism your a loser. If you cant appreciate a nice peek at some choice body parts, your so frakking vanilla you should find a convent and get away form society.
