September 27th, 2006 02:14

thanks
September 27th, 2006 09:05
This was great, I read this in the morning, and the family took a little nature hike later that same day, I scooped up some big leaves and walked behind for a bit and was able to make the rose, tie it off with some long weeds and then push a branch up into it and walk up next to my wife and present it to her, she thinks I am the most romantic guy alive
THANKS!

This is lovely! I just showed it to my son and he is going to make me some for my desk.
October 4th, 2006 08:54
This is great! My mom will love it! Now I can stop raking the yard!
October 4th, 2006 20:20
omg! i love your idea.
i wanna try it out but the directions are kinda not exact. i guess i can do thi for mother’s day or for christmas! please make a more exact direction
October 5th, 2006 09:37
now all i need is a maple tree!
October 5th, 2006 09:57
The directions are inexact, but the general idea is enough to get you going. It’s an art, not a science, you know. Just keep playing until you make ‘em look like roses.
For example, the step-by-step images imply you use three leaves, but in the 12th picture with three finished roses you can see that it took more than that for some. If you roll three and it doesn’t have the right fullness at the outer layer, grab another leaf and roll it around what you have, folded a bit shorter and rolled a bit looser. It will work just fine.
Tips from the ones I just made in the yard:
It might help to find some smaller leaves for the inside layers, and larger ones for the outside. In the images, it looks like the first two were about the same size but the last one was quite a bit larger. It evens out when you roll looser.
Many of the leaves on the ground will be too crisp. You’ll want to find colored ones that are still pretty soft, which may mean you need to shake them off a branch or even pluck them.
No thread handy? You can strip a leaf down to the stem and veins and use that instead. If the stem is too thick, you can peel it a little from the bottom.
It took 4 tries before I made one just as pretty as the pictures above. The making goes pretty fast. Gathering the “right” leaves took far more time, but even so the whole experiment took about 10 minutes.
I’m glad I came across this at the beginning of leaf falling season around here – I should be pretty expert at this by the time we get our first leaf storms.
October 5th, 2006 10:30
wah! I wish it were autum!
October 5th, 2006 14:30
Very nice, this’ll make a nice center piece. Heck I can even surprise my husband with a “bouquet of roses” on an autumn walk..lol! (yeah, I’m crafty and he gets quite a kick out of it.)
October 5th, 2006 14:38
If the only leaves you can find are crunchy soak them for a bit. Ever heard leaves crunch on a rainy day?
October 5th, 2006 15:20
they need to stop biting their nails!
October 5th, 2006 15:47
Bery cool
October 5th, 2006 16:56
This is so neat, and simple (Zzonkerr’s advice up in the comments was invaluable too.) Thanks for posting!
October 5th, 2006 17:37
This is a very cool tip. I never imagined something could be done like this. I am thankful for your creativity that has brought a smile to my face and my heart. Good for you.
Cheers…
October 5th, 2006 19:59
soak leaves in glycerin. Soak the whole rose in glycerin to preserve. Beautiful!
October 5th, 2006 21:26
what a cheap bastard.
why not just go get some other flowers if roses are not in season?
this person may think women like this type of shite, especially when so many of women have “confirmed” that they rather “get something made for me” instead of purchased.
but really, when you give these “roses” to a girl, she will think you are either gay or have absolutely no life.
and for all of you have left comments like “neat”, “great”, or “impressive”, you need to get out more instead of sitting in front of the bloody computers.
go smell the really bloody roses instead of fake bloody maple leaves.
October 5th, 2006 22:39
WOW! The last two photos just blew my mind!! I must try this. I feel fortunate to have two maples in my yard!
October 5th, 2006 23:09
That is nice. I love those maple leaves and now they have one additional decorative benefits.
October 6th, 2006 04:09
Very beautiful and cool!
October 6th, 2006 06:41
They are pretty alright… pretty ugly and pretty apt to stay that way.

Brilliant technique… the same results can be achieved with other materials… Ribbon, Dollar bills, Decorative paper… even Green Leaves…it’s a FUN idea… the technique was first made popular in the 60’s and it is great to see it coming around again… FUN!
want more fun flower projects…

To: bbc america,
I agree with #25 (daisy) . It’s great idea…If you think you are so great then what do you have to offer? I prefer anything that will last for years to come and this idea is just one that will do just that…I plan on making several for gifts and just because….way to go to the great idea maker…
October 8th, 2006 11:29
Fantastic creation! I will definitely try it.
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to All you folders out there !!

October 11th, 2006 10:31
ANYBODY can go to a store and pick up roses…it takes someone caring to make the roses as a gift…lovely idea and I’d be thrilled to receive such a gift made from the heart…..so much more meaningful…dislike receiving purchased gifts!!!!
October 11th, 2006 12:35
These photos are wonderful and inspiring, thank you for putting them up!
October 11th, 2006 21:25
@bbc america
You are an idiot Sir.
Any chick will dig you like the Digg V3 Uprgrade if you actually MAKE something for her instead of going out and buying some 15 rose boquet where there is only one ACTUAL rose.
October 12th, 2006 13:50
Lovely!!!!!!
October 12th, 2006 16:37
this would be a good gift to a chick?
like if your walking in the park with her make one
while your walking with her and give it to her
October 12th, 2006 18:23
Very cool, I love the idea. Will definitely use this soon. Very very cool. And screw the party-poopers. Why are they even here in the first place if they think it’s stupid?
October 14th, 2006 21:29
These are wonderful. What a great idea and lots of fun. Thanks for sharing.
October 15th, 2006 03:02
beautiful!I love the idea very much!
October 15th, 2006 14:11
My dad and I immediately ran out and drove around town looking for a maple tree. Then he sneaked out of the car and stole some perfect leave while I waited in the car. The leaves were great. We made two roses, now we need to steal more leaves.
October 17th, 2006 09:00
Awesome, I am allergic to flowers so fake yet real ones are really cool. For the “Bloody” poster, maybe go learn some better vocabulary words. Also, leave people to enjoy the better things, like FREE fall roses… made out of maple leaves.

October 20th, 2006 13:55
What a great idea. I love them. Is there a way to preserve them to last until Thanksgiving? I found a beautiful maple to get leaves from. Thank you from Cape Cod
October 22nd, 2006 18:31
My first try at this looked like a first try, but the second went quickly (2 minutes) and turned out great. I then did the project with 4 kids (ages 8, 11 & 13) they all loved the process and results.
Before getting started, I’d suggest you first read the posts of Zzonkerr #11 and Elaine #19. Both provide reliable tips for collecting leaves, rolling, and preserving your results.
For creativity, time, and money involved, this is an A+ project.
October 24th, 2006 09:38
OMG!!!! THIS IS SOOO COOL!!!!! Now all I have to do is find my some leaves!!!!!!!!
November 2nd, 2006 11:50
thats a great idea.. Now I can have people make them and send them to people that are in the hospotial…. they will love them… thx for the idea… from steph(NORTHVILLE NY)
November 6th, 2006 17:00
im so incredibly happy that you guys posted the right amount of pictures to explain what to do.
thanks.
i plan on collecting leaves all afternoon with my little brother and sister.
November 14th, 2006 02:41
These are wonderful, I can’t wait to make a centerpiece with my kids, who will enjoy making and feeling proud once completed. I used to make leather long stem roses when I bartended and women loved them because they would never die yet still were a rose, the symbol of love. Therefore I think bbc is full of you know what and maybe he needs to get out and enjoy life instead of posting nasty comments to people that are kindly sharing their art. If you don’t like someone art then it is simple, don’t look, move on.
Anyway, I think they are great, creative and make beautiful fall decorations.

January 4th, 2007 00:16
Wow what a fantastic idea. Wonderful!!
January 8th, 2007 04:13
To bbc., Be nice.
This is a really cute way to use something that will just die away, why not turn it into something beautiful and useful. I personally would probably never make these, but who am I to make fun of someone who would.
Keep those ideas coming, we all have something to share. Lets be thankful that we are all individuals and that we don’t all like the same thing, but play nice and let everyone else enjoy.
January 8th, 2007 10:41
This is a very cute idea. I wish I had known about it when I got married a few years ago. I had a fall wedding and it would have made for perfect centerpieces for the tables. Crafty and cute, but FREE!
I’ll definitely be making these next fall for a centerpiece for our dining room. Very seasonal!
January 8th, 2007 12:05
Definately creative. Lovely work. The part of the world I live in we don’t have maple leaves. Any other leaves which could be used instead?

Thank you so much!
January 28th, 2007 21:26
WOW!! These are beautiful as well as, extremely creative!! Can’t wait to try ‘em!! As for #’s 15,20,& 24,”And you said you are “HOW OLD??” Pa-leezze, if you don’t have anything worth saying, don’t waste our time with your useless comments!! And…. Adam,(#38,) It don’t get more romantic / impressive than a man picking up a few leaves during a walk and seemingly out of no where inventing a beautiful rose crafted just for her…out of the blue!! YOU GO!!
What a valuable idea… Kudo’s to the originator!! Wonderful idea!! –BRAVO!!!
January 29th, 2007 03:28
What a totally cool idea! I wish I had a tree with leaves on it right now to try it out!
February 1st, 2007 11:02
Great idea! I just don’t have maple in the Philippines
Maybe some other big leaves will do… and to BBC America, I pity you, you’re too materialistic…
And to Gagarin who pointed out the originator, it’s good to have this one posted here in English, at least.
February 1st, 2007 14:42

Awesome! What a great idea and costs nothing! I have a HUGE maple tree in my backyard. Can’t wait to make these roses next Fall. I think they would be even prettier combined with berries from beauty bush, early hollies and maybe some Fall seed pods from other flowers/plants. Many thanks for sharing your creativity and for all the creative comments that followed this posting.
March 5th, 2007 21:32

wow!thts amazing!simply beautiful n gr8 imagination
i was shocked how u can make exotic things out of such simple things
April 14th, 2007 05:18
How I got to this site, I don’t know! However… what a fab project to do with kids! I get tired of the old maple leaf and crayon shavings in between two pieces of waxed paper!
Personally, I think this is a project that just needs one to work with the leaves to get the effect one wants. Therefore I think the pics are sufficient. Probably any large leaf that has some color to it would also work!
Also, good idea with using glycerin as a preservative! Fie to posts 15, 20 and 24! Probably don’t have a creative bone in their bodies and are somewhat jealous!
April 15th, 2007 19:29
Very sexy, dahlink!

May 24th, 2007 06:30
This presents the possibility of green roses if done earlier in the season. Perhaps some red or yellow leaves down the stem (attached using some florist’s wire) would produce an interesting reversal effect. I think my girlfriend would appreciate that since she doesn’t like red roses.
May 25th, 2007 11:42
How awesome! I can’t wait to do this as a craft with my girls.

Heh, I hear that. We don’t have many trees that have leaves out here in the desert. Someone should show how to make a rose out of Cactus needles.

August 14th, 2007 05:32
You are very creative. One question I wish to ask you is whether the leaves would eventually turn brown or not? How long can the “flowers” last? Come visit my site and share your comments.
Thank you.

September 29th, 2007 07:11
How beautiful, but where am I to find maple leaves like that here in the middle of the desert?
September 30th, 2007 07:10
i haven’t had time to try this yet. but i would imagine that any sort of leaf would do, as long as you folded them carefully and you had leaves of similar size to build the same kind of buildup. because it’s not really taking the shape of the leaf into use.
October 2nd, 2007 09:08

November 17th, 2007 23:56
This is a cool craft idead…and for you guys that laugh and critize the original poster for the idea. Get a life. I don’t consider this a “gift idea for my hubby to make me”. I consider it a terrific seasonal decorating idea. I would consider giving it to a girl friend of mine that it would go perfect with her decorating style!

December 7th, 2007 21:24
This looks lovely.
I do wonder if the preservative technique in another comment would work?
And I’d FAR rather receive these than ‘perfect roses’ with no scent or soul from the store.
I just wish we had maples around here.
December 8th, 2007 07:05
I absolutely love this idea!!!! We have plenty of maple trees in this state, and I plan on trying this in the spring. What a wonderfully natural idea! Thank you!!

January 12th, 2008 12:28

January 12th, 2008 17:31
i thought it was a great idea, can’t wait to try it!!!
January 13th, 2008 09:30
So I know some of you are absolutely devastated (as I was) when you saw such an amazing project, but then quickly realized that you have no maple trees, or even any idea where they grow. Not to fear, if you live south of the mason-dixon a sycamore tree will work beautifully. (There the ones with the brown spikey balls)
-enjoy
January 13th, 2008 22:15
Those turn out sooo pretty! I made a whole bouquet for my mom!

I can’t help saying Thank you to you for this idea. It’s really really nice

It’s quite hard to find such big maple leaves in my country (’cause Maple is not popular here), but I will try to find some good leaves. Otherwise, I will try with some other kinds of leaf. This’s maybe interesting ’cause I will have “green” for “purple” roses
Thank U very much for sharing

As I see this,I was not impressed, it did not look that much realistic of a rose, but the reason I am writing this comment is because my wife is totally impressed with this. Unfortunately fall is over, and there are no more leaves outside there.
We will wait until next year .

To all the previous posters that say “why not just buy real roses” you obviously don’t get the point and are not nearly as romantic as you think you are. While “real” roses are terrific, this little project is PERFECT for when you’re walking with your sweetie in the fall, it WILL completely knock her off her feet by the sheer surprise of your sweet thoughtfulness. This is a great project for kids too- as they love making stuff out of anything lol. I’m so glad I stumbled on this site, my best friend is having an early autumn wedding and plans on making her own centerpieces and this might just be perfect for her!
June 1st, 2008 17:16
Fabulous, but unfortunately I am uable to do it as I am in India and we don’t find any maple leaves here.

My daughter is getting married this fall in Southern Indiana at one of our state parks in an area overlooking the Ohio River. It will be right in the middle of leaf season. Across the river is Brandenburg, KY… one of their forestries over there. Anyway… my daughter found this bouquet to be her bridal bouquet… I practiced with silk maple leaves and have that for her toss bouquet. It is so beautiful.
Great idea!!!
June 26th, 2008 15:19

September 2nd, 2008 16:48
“Why not just buy real roses?” Because real roses aren’t any fun to make. This isn’t all about how roses are great as romantic gifts (or not). I don’t think the sole purpose of making things is to give them to other people, or for “romantic” purposes. Just sitting down for half an hour with a hobby is a gift to yourself. Period.
September 4th, 2008 00:55
It is really good idea
September 5th, 2008 19:30

Wow – what an amazing concept! I think if I tried to make some, it might be disasterous!
November 22nd, 2008 21:26
If a girl didn’t like these, then she must be really materialistic and immature. I know I would much rather have something hand-made over something bought at the last minute any day. Will definitely be showing this to my boy and hope that he gets the drift. Lol.
November 24th, 2008 10:53
Can’t differentiate from real roses. Amazing effort and the flowers look so beautiful.

I wish I had a maple tree in my garden, I’d enjoy maple syrup on my cereal every day. Unfortunately I don’t live in Canada. Anyway, the maple roses look lovely
April 24th, 2009 11:09
BBC America:
You sure told us all. What lifeless morons we are to enjoy creativity and appreciate art. We should surely go spend money on “real” flowers to avoid the risk of being thought of as a homosexual.
FYI I am a girl. If a guy gave me those, I’d think it was resourceful, thrifty, and far more romantic than prim finely cut roses that he could have purchased.
You my sir are the one who needs a life instead of sitting in front of a computer and bashing peoples creations.
April 24th, 2009 11:11
P.S- Love the maple flowers. (obviously)

I’m a Canadian living close to Vancouver BC. We have maple leaves everywhere! those suckers are a pain in the neck when you have to rake them. But now I have a new fondness for them and will carefully stack them in the garage. All you californians and from the south… come on over to my place
Absolutely brilliant idea!

The best thing to do with Maple leaves in the Autumn is to place them in a barrel and burn them. I love the smell of burning leaves…Fire! Fire!
June 30th, 2009 22:28
really beautiful and creative!
June 30th, 2009 23:23
I am totally going to make this when I go home to WA tomorrow. This is beatutiful!
Its a great way to recycle all those leaves that fall to the ground in Fall instead of raking them up and throwing them away. Although we never have done that in my household, we rake them into a pile then toss it into the woods to be naturally recycled but some people have to PAY to get rid of their yard clippings.
Similar ideas have been posted in a group on Greenwala.com for ways to recycle things or reuse items for craft ideas http://tinyurl.com/create.php

Very Cute Rose done at minimal cost. I appreciate your Creativity.
July 29th, 2009 22:09
I stumbled on this the first time today. What a fantastic idea. I love making things out of “nothing” and so natural. For those blockheads who think this is stupid, you really do need to move on when you come to a site like this. No one needs or wants your criticism. As for those who want to preserve these, why not just let them take their natural tole, and make more the next fall. Very creative and wonderful idea!
August 4th, 2009 22:51
haha, i wonder how big my roses would be if i used big leaf maple leaves!!! !!!! maybe i’ll post pictures of my attempts this fall!

September 27th, 2009 02:52
To each his own … i prefer a gift that shows some thought … that shows some creativity instead of just going to the store and buying roses that anyone can buy … yes… it is that special touch that always matters… not the cash spent on a gift…:)

October 17th, 2009 16:45
on the other hand, you could just buy roses. less hassle
October 19th, 2009 02:50
I love this! I use leaves for decoration all the time, but this is so original.
October 20th, 2009 03:33
AWESOME! This I will definitely have to try
October 20th, 2009 20:02
This is pretty groovy. All the comments complaining about too much time and whatnot….hahaha not even worth a response.
This is amazing, and I’ve actually done it with some leaves that are different than maple and achieved some interesting creations! They don’t resemble the finished picture on here exactly, but they’re definitely beautiful in their own right. If you don’t have a maple tree, just try with some other leaves until you find one that works out!
October 21st, 2009 05:04
These are really cool! I’ve never done more than rake the leaves before so I have to try this!
October 23rd, 2009 17:38

fine if you have access to a largesupply of maples, i live in scotland and no maple leaves here, tis quite a good way of wasting time right enough
November 13th, 2009 17:50
no maples in scotland, and the links for flowers above.i.e. lotus, black christmas tree. the links lead u 2 believe how to make other flowers. but no some stupid search engine I SO HATE THAT
