I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time. Thanks for such creative ideas. It makes me want to take my camera out and capture the humor in the simpler things of life in a medium that can be shared. In sharing, the captured is set free again. BTW, I turned your zipper upside down and it became a rocket going into outer space. You have it shown possibly crashing. Ha!

First, the photos are beautifully produced, top-notch black and white. Yet much, much scarcer in this world is true creativity, a true unique vision. These photos take what Man Ray started, almost a century ago, and pick up that ball, taking it to further levels. Anyone think this is easy to do? Try coming up with one original take on this world, let alone an entire protfolio.

I love the style. Some of them have a real inspiration of originality.
I find so often monochrome is used to give something that otherwise has no edge an ‘artistique’ feel. Madoz clearly understands Black and White and most of the results are striking…

Hello Chema,
I came across your site a few weeks back and some of these images have made a very strong impresson on me, I have been thinking about them to the point that i am starting to see shapes and subtleties differently.
The reason I am writing you is because I am working for a youth non-profit media organization in Sydney Australia called Vibewire. One of our upcoming projects is called election tracker and it is basically an online forum and political opinion column written by the voices of young australians to attempt to balance out the media bias of the murdoch empire, etc.
I am in charge of promotions for the organization and with that comes, e-flyers to attempt to draw in as much participation and engagement from young people as possible.
I have had this image of the scales with the two cherries in my mind. I was thinking of maybe trying to design something using scales, but i thought about it and the idea is not mine, its yours, and its not the scales i like so much but the image you have created. This is perhaps a long shot but I thought I would ask you in hopes that maybe you would be keen to perhaps give us the rights to use this image for the next few months in our promotion efforts to try and rally up youth political discussion.
I would send you an example of what the eflyer will look like but i cannot attach documents in this email.
Please let me know how you feel about this. I completely understand if you would prefer not to. I think you are a genius regardless. Congratulations on your thought provoking and very stimulating pieces.

Shot something similar once for an ad campaign for Tinea – A pair of flip flops with made from Barbed wire. Think it got the point across. Several of the pictures are not working. You really take the creative processes seriously without going over the top, I like that. Some photographs try to be so innovative that you no longer recognise the meaning, message or the motif. “To make something original, take tow thing you know and try to combine them.” You do that gracefully. Great ideas and excellent work. Very inspirational. Wished I seen this when i studied photography a few years back. I see you lke the burning matchstik theme. I like water droplets and needle. Your mirrors theme are good also.
I reckon you can combine the mirrors and time ideas. Im sorta picturing a hallway of endless clocks. But to spice things up, id use photoshop to make all the clock face different. Can u do that???

I can only agree with most people here, this is absolutely beautiful work – very inspiring.
I want to rush out and take some pictures right now, I may not get anywhere near this level but am inspired to at least try. That is what great art does, it pulls you along in its wake.
On the other hand it is sad to see the comments from a few bitter, twisted, sad little people scattered amongst the well deserved praise.

Interesting….What I’m amazed at is so many of the photographs obviously need such effort to set up. And if you imagine that a photographer exhibits only the best of his/her work, then you can imagine how much more effort went into setting up the images that never made the final cut.

These would be more successful and interesting to me if they were not all smack dab in the middle of the picture plane. Compositionally your pieces are tired and old. Conceptually you have some really creative ideas and insights. It’s a shame that you let the basic laws of design fall by the wayside.

I enjoyed the grass flip flops (my favorite), ebony/ivory clothespin, head full of clouds, noose of pearls, drain in dry earth the most. Very visionary but still poignant and of course beautifully and technically accomplished.

Looks like a lot of them were designed to sell something, sort of silly, shallow visual tricks meant to “catch the eye” for a split second, then read the ad. Nothing more.
As such, they’re good, but don’t “say” much, they’re not “art”.

I’m impressed with the creativity and innovation and freshness of the pictures, but I have to ask…
What’s the point? I fail to find a “message”, an idea, a theme. Some pictures seem to stretch and almost grasp an ephemeral “moral” but fall short and merely retread cliches, like the picture of the clock-like coffin.
Without a centralizing idea, these pictures find themselves relegated to the glutted realm of the “pretty picture”, fit for artistic high-schoolers’ desktops or inspirational posters.

I really enjoy these photos. I love you how ordinary objects that are somehow related/connected can either create a really great design, or (in the case of the clock mounted on a coffin) portray great symbolism and meaning. Incredible. All visionary and/or meaningful. However, I am a bit confounded by the Atlas picture. It seems to be just an Atlas. I see no depth, no artistic creativity, just the cover of a book. Yet, when surrounded by all these other masterpieces, the simpleness of it somehow… fits.

What can I say? It makes me conscious of how careless and approximate my art work is. This fellow aims at perfection in a truly old-world attitude and passion! Good on you! However, having said this, I love my own rough and approximate work as more human. Perfection could be a hint of arrogance. Who knows? I do not know the artist personally.

Nice ideas. my opinion is photography is an instant reaction, i think theres too much thought in all of these photos. If some of these were colourful they would stand out. but theres nothing beautiful about a hat, violin, noose or a book with a mirror in the middle. well done for getting your stuff out there though, and keep it up.

I like that objects appear commonplace at first, referencing very played-out images of nostalgia, but then there is always a surprising element that changes everything. The best part is the surprise is not all that strange, yet having accepted the image as standard, really shocks the senses, but so subtly that I am left thinking and guessing your intentions.

ONLY a very FEW would I call (even) GOOD. On a scale of 1 to 10, MAYBE 4!! MOST are CONTRIVED! These above have NO BASIS in reality. I, as a photographer, look at REAL nature, find that UNIQUE small detail, THAT no one else has seen, & then I squeeze the shutter. I compose, looking for the best angle, I may MOVE a leaf, remove a dried up petal to get that shot of the rose, may wait for a cloud to pass to get better lighting, BUT DO NOT put unreal or unrelated subjects together (read Contrive)! Excellent creativity using simple things. The filmstrip on hat picture really got me going – perfect lighting. The needle with beads, mowing the carpet, the maple leaf. Simply superb!

This Sunday morning breakfast a sinergy of smell, coffee and lemon juice, a soft egg with spices, bread with cinamon and of course my laptop fixed between two flowers that I got from my sister and I constantly forget to water. Sunday media is too hard on my breakfast, Putin invades North Osetia [wonder if he does it all by himself, dressed in green], read a review in Russian about a theater play performed by Abhazia National Theater, quit. Then wash my eyes with the work of Chema Madoz. Beauty. Art.

The fac that it took me half a minute to scroll trough the comments at full speed says enough about the quality of the pics. I think they’re absolutely brilliant. Originial, inspiring, but also humoristic. I like it. I think you should try some color too. Photos don’t have to be black/white to be beautiful. These are, but I think this type of amazing pictures can be extended by using colors to create this superb effects.

You really take the creative processes seriously without going over the top, I like that. Some photographs try to be so innovative that you no longer recognise the meaning, message or the motif. “To make something original, take tow thing you know and try to combine them.” You do that gracefully. Lot of mind put into meaningless and worthless things to bring forth the creativity.
I mean what is the value of burnt match sticks? Nothing whatsoever. But little bit of creativity applied even to burnt match sticks can create designs that can fascinate you.
