The Birth of a Chicken

Friday, May 30th, 2008.

Like other birth photo series (of a panda, a parrot and a Cecropia Moth), these of a chicken could somehow shock and disgust you. But, it is always interesting to watch the beginning of a life.

well to be perfectly honest on these pictures is shown the end of a life. When you break an egg to see how a chick develops you actually kill the chick – a chick that would be alive if it wasn’t for human curiosity ;|

Are those photos of the same chicken, developing in very clean, controlled laboratory settings?

Or are they each a snapshot of an egg broken open on a different day of incubation?

    Just curious. Amazing series, though.

Considering that millions of eggs and chickens are eaten everyday, I don’t see how anyone could be offended by a couple of eggs broken in the name is science.

I took an embryology lab in college. There is a way to grow an egg without a shell around it. We made a little hammock by suspending saran wrap on a dixie cup secured with a rubberband. Cracked the fertilized egg into the hammock, then covered it with a sterile petri dish and incubated it in a walk-in incubator.

Most of the time, the chicks died because of bacterial/mold infection. But a few did survive until almost ready to hatch.

So 18 birds were killed for this photostream. I hope much was learned, like the secret to growing human kidneys, and it was worth more than 7 comments.

Where did this come from? How did they do it without an egg? Sources, please, I am fascinated, and you guys are usually really good on sources, but I can find none here.

You see in the 4th picture that the yolk was busted and in later ones you see the yolk also being exposed or busted..meaning each picture is of a different embryo broken out of a shell and obviously killed. Unless you’re a vegan I don’t see how this is so horrible to anyone..worry more about the conditions animals are put in AFTER they are born.

We can argue about the morality of this procedure, or if it is scientificly justified or whatever else. The bottom line is that we as humans stoped respecting the nature and we are puting ourselves above it, trying to understand it no matter what the consequences.
So where do you draw the line – is it ok if it is done on humans. Ofcourse not. It’s a human after all right? Implying humans are far more valuable then the other living beings on this planet. Which demonstrates my point that we dont respect nothing but ourselves.

It reminds me of a story by a chinise philosopher…

Balut is a fertilized egg that has been incubated prior to being eaten, not merely a fertilized egg. An un-incubated fertilized egg looks and tastes the same as a un-fertilized egg although they are more expensive to produce commercially.

If the eggs were broken, wouldn’t a more accurate description be that these chickens were aborted, albeit without the consent of the mother? If that’s the case, then that is the point of departure from which you must decide if they were “killed.” As for me, I like eggs with hash browns, some cheese, and Cholula hot sauce. Yum yum!

Funny how many people have an issue with the taking of these pictures to show how amazing nature has been created.
Yet I wonder how many of the people that mentioned disgust at what is displayed have the same idea about abortion. The taking of a human life for the sake of convenience or in-convenience.

Would we justify breaking human eggs? Good question. According to the Boston Globe, the rate of human abortions performed–eggs that were “broken”–in the United States last year was 1.2 million.

Abortions are always done for convenience of the bitch with you people. Never to save the life of the woman or to prevent a 9 year old from having to have her body torn apart by having the baby of the asshole who raped her.

The convenience – inconvenience is really a good case:)) Now that’s one to ponder over :) )
Still, if you abort because you are not ready to have a baby is quite different to aborting 18 times just to satisfy your curiosity and see how the fetus of your baby develops.
Surely if you did that you would have to be quite sick to admire such a procedure. Don’t you think?

Which doesn’t mean you cannot learn about the fetus through abortions done for other reasons.

I always knew that the yolk of the egg was what a chick grew from, but a friend tried to convince me that it was the white of the egg. Now I know where to go to prove my case to them!!

By the way, I have always considered the white of the egg to be little more than amniotic fluid, but the same friend told me there is more nutritional fluid in the white than the yolk. I DO NOT believe this to be true. Any take on that??

ok the chick is formed in the yolk area but not from the yolk, the yolk is the placenta, and just like humans the chick is formed from a “germ sac” and yes the white is the amniotic fluid

I actually enjoyed the pictures. As I was watching this I have a chicken who is setting and is under my computer desk. Mama chicken comes through our doggie door and thinks she should live in the house. She hatched one egg a couple of months ago and the chick is doing great. It appears to be a rooster. Mama chicken is now sitting on 5 eggs of her own. She rolls them around several times a day. I placed a blue egg under her and hope it hatches also. Our mama is a white leghorn.

To all those that argue that this is just fine because we eat chickens:

They are killed to be eaten which is a worthy cause, and only worthy when it is done humanely and no waste is produced (wasters can GTF).

These embryos were destroyed for our curiosity, nothing more. We already know what a developing embryo looks like, why do we need to repeat this sick experiment again if not for educational purposes (which was a lame excuse to make this seem worthwhile).
